HIGH GRASSINGS COUNTRY HOUSE, Ambleside

High Grassings Country House is an adults-only retreat set among the fells of the Lake District with views over Esthwaite Water. The restored property has a large terrace with seating facing the water, while the grounds include gardens and a picnic area. Wray Castle, a National Trust property, is 10 minutes away by car, and Tarn Hows is reachable in 8 minutes. Grizedale Forest, a hiking and cycling destination, is a 16-minute drive, while Esthwaite Water is a fishing venue on the doorstep.

Breakfast is served in the conservatory and includes a full cooked English option with eggs from the hotel's own chickens, plus continental choices with fruits and yoghurts. Vegan alternatives are available on request, and the menu uses produce from local farms and butchers. The hosts accommodate special diets and dietary needs with advance notice.

The grounds are home to free-roaming chickens and a peacock, and a candle-lit path leads back to the house after dusk.
